Ridonculous Race To Name The Place: Beijing

Zzz… eh? Wazzat? Oh, sorry folks, the jet lag from all this bouncing around from country to country is really starting to get to me! I’m up now, though, I’m good. What were we talking about? Right, right, time to reveal this week’s location in ‘The Ridonculous Race To Name The Place!’ Are your guesses locked in yet? Because the answer is: Beijing!

Bejing is the capital city of China and one of the most populous cities in the entire world with well over 20 million residents! Even so it has the second largest population in the country behind Shanghai.

Beijing has had plenty of time to grow to that population: the city’s history stretches back more than three thousand years! No surprise then that it’s home to a whopping seven World Heritage Sites, places chosen by the United Nations for their special cultural significance.

One of those World Heritage Sites is the ‘Forbidden City’, the walled palace that was once home to emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties and their families and servants for hundreds of years.

Construction of the palace started in 1406 and took fourteen years to finish with 980 buildings covering 180 acres! The ‘Forbidden’ part comes from the tradition that no one could enter or leave the city-within-a-city without the emperor’s permission.

South of the Forbidden City is Tiananmen Square, one of the largest city squares in the world at 880 by 500 meters, having been enlarged several times since its beginnings in the early 1400s.

As a massive meeting place it’s been the site of many important events in Beijing’s history. Tiananmen Gate sits on the northern side of the square, with the Monument to the People’s Heroes on the southern, the Great Hall of the People on the western and the National Museum of China in on the eastern side.
